ZIMBABWE: Humanitarian crisis

Back in the mid 1990s Zimbabwe was known as the breadbasket of Africa. It was a a prosperous and fertile land with real promise and a real future. Today, all that is left is a shattered wreck and its problems have at the root of them one man, President Robert Mugabe. For 20 years the world has watched this dictator crush his opponents, brutalise his people and drive his country to the brink of collapse. Life expectancy in Zimbabwe is now just 37 years. Nearly half of the people are malnourished, and inflation is so high a weeks wages will barely buy a loaf of bread. It is a desperate situation with little sign of things getting better.
