This week I spent part of the week up in Ottawa. Decided instead of flying I'd take the train. I think the co-workers thought the idea was crazy and I wasn't sure it would be a good idea either, but I thought it was worth trying. I like trains and haven't had the opportunity to use a train much so this sounded like a good idea to me. I thought it might even be practical since I wouldn't have to worry about my car, parking or getting to the airport early. That part worked out...you could get to the train station 5 minutes before the train left if you wanted. The train is less of a long trip if you compare it to the total time it would take for me to drive to the airport, wait, fly, wait at the other airport, wait for the taxi, and finally take the taxi to the hotel. The train leaves Guelph, and arrives in Ottawa walking distance to my Hotel. In the end it is still longer - but since I spend most of that journey sitting in the same seat its not that bad a compromise. During the journey I have lots of room, and lots of nice food to eat - even complimentary wine and liquor. I think its actually relaxing - the clicky clack of the train and the length of the trip allow you to read or sleep if you like. Of course I on the other hand tried to wire myself up. Tried to use the GPS in my phone to track the journey, and tried to use the onboard wifi service. Both failed however for me. The wifi didn't work and I left my phone cable at home so I couldn't use my GPS. Which could have been a hint to just relax and read...but instead I watched some prerecorded tv on my laptop. I guess its just my way to relax. I think I'd do it again if work needs to send me within Ontario and it was a long enough drive.
