Luminara 2007 festival theme announced The theme for Luminara Victoria 2007 will be "The Five Directions". While modern western thinking counts four cardinal points (north, south, east and west) many cultures, including the Irish, several Indo-European cultures and the Chinese, consider five directions - the fifth being 'here' or 'centre'. Luminara's interpretation of "The Five Directions" will serve as inspiration for artists and performers in five main zones of Beacon Hill Park. NORTH will be reflected with visions of "ICE" - a place frozen in time or imagination, with elements of surrealism, fantasy or other-worldiness. Inspirations may include Cirque du Soleil, photographer Cecil Beaton, The Chronicles of Narnia and others. Elements will include 'actual' ice, plastic, glass, plexiglass, mirror and metal. White and silver, glitter and sparkle will light up this area. SOUTH will be interpreted as "CARNIVALE" - bright, lively, colorful and celebratory, with Latin American, European and Southern U.S. festival influences. EAST will travel the "SILK ROAD" - taking inspiration from China, India and the far east. Homage will be paid to the traditional Chinese Lantern Festival, Wesak, Tanabata and Rokugatsudo festivals, and other cultural influences from throughout the East. Red, pink, orange and gold tones will predominate. WEST explores "POP" culture and modern art, from the British Invasion to Andy Warhol and beyond. Think "Carnaby Street", Yellow Submarine, Jackson Pollock, Bauhaus Movement and psychadelia. Bright colors, black&white, bold graphics and patterns will rule here. CENTRE is inspired by "ANCIENT CIVILIZATIONS" - ancient cultures and indigenous peoples - which may inclue Egyptian pyramids or Moroccan lanterns, Mayan temples, Australian Aboriginal art or West Coast native carvings. Colors choices will take their cue from nature - sand, stone, water, turquoise, etc.
