Diabetes is a condition in which the body does not produce or does not properly use insulin. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas, a large gland behind the stomach. When our bodies do not produce the right amount of insulin or when cells do not respond appropriately to the insulin that is produced, the foods we eat are not converted into the energy we need for daily life. Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes can be diagnosed at any age, although Type 2 diabetes is the kind that is associated with obesity. Early symptoms of diabetes include increased hunger and/or thirst, unexplained weight loss, and frequent urination. Diabetes can have very severe consequences -- especially on vision, nerves, kidney and heart function – unless it is properly managed.
