WEATHER: Floods cause chaos in Britain

In the last 24 hours, across much of Britain, a whole month's worth of rain has fallen. Hundreds of people have been evacuated from their homes, dozens of schools closed and there has been major disruption on the roads and the railways. One man died after becoming trapped as he tried to clear a blocked drain in Hull. Divers had tried desperately to free him. Up to four inches of rain fell in places. The worst affected areas are Devon, Gloucestershire, Lincolnshire, Yorkshire, Manchester and North Wales. Ten severe flood warnings have been issued by the Environment Agency, together with a further 68 standard flood warnings. There are also flash warnings of heavy rain for much of the country.
