Virgin Media have launched High Court proceedings against fierce rival BSkyB in an attempt to resolve their bitter dispute. The argument stems from a disagreement over the amount BSkyB charges Virgin to show its basic Sky channels. The group, rebranded from NTL earlier this year, accused BSkyB of "using its dominance" in the industry to suppress competition after the broadcasting giant refused to settle the quarrel through arbitration by an independent expert. In March BSkyB withdrew its basic channels from Virgin Media, leaving viewers without channels such as Sky News and Sky One, just as shows like 24 and Lost were in mid-series.Virgin Media accuse BSkyB of attempting to double the price for its basic channels.Virgin Media's biggest shareholder is entrepreneur Sir Richard Branson, while BSkyB is run by James Murdoch, the son of the media tycoon Rupert Murdoch.© Independent Television News Limited 2007.
