5/20/07 Valley High School Lockdowned due to telephone threat of violence. Here is the official press release from the City of Valley's Website: http://www.cityofvalley.com April 20, 2007 PRESS RELEASE For Immediate Print/Broadcast Consideration School Threat Investigated -- Valley High School At 8:43 a.m. the Valley Police Department received an anonymous telephone call placed from a cellular telephone, indicating the possibility of armed individuals on the Valley High School campus, 501 South U.S. Highway 29. The caller provided little specific information before hanging up on the dispatcher, prompting a law enforcement response on to the campus. As part of the school crisis response plans, emergency medical personnel, fire officials, Chambers County School Superintendent Leonard Riley, and school safety coordinator George McCulloh also responded. School officials immediately placed the campus in "lockdown" status, and an initial sweep of the buildings and grounds by police officers proved negative. A secondary search of classrooms, offices, and students then followed, with no weapons of any kind located. Additionally, no unauthorized persons were found upon the property, and no threat was verified. No injuries occurred during the incident to students, faculty, or responders. Upon word of the incident spreading, numerous parents flooded the area of the school, greatly complicating the scene control and prolonging the management of the event. Several parents requested the release of their children and a controlled discharge of students began at approximately 11:30 a.m. The investigation is underway regarding the identity and origin of the caller, however the veracity of the information is questionable, given the anonymity and limited duration of the call, as well as today's date is the last day of school prior recess for spring break. Anyone with any information should contact Valley Crimestoppers at 334-756-8200, or the Valley Police Department at 334-756-5200. The Chambers County Board of Education may be reached at 706-586-2280. The City of Valley thanks Superintendent Riley and his staff, the East Alabama Fire Department, and other emergency responders for their assistance in this case. James T. Bryan City Administrator
