Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni, during a speech on Monday (November 13) in Los Angeles, warned that the threat posed by Iran's nuclear program is one aimed not only at the Jewish state, but to the world itself. Livni, who was in California for the United Jewish Communities' General Assembly in Los Angeles, made the comments during a luncheon at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel. The Vice Prime Minister, whose trip coincides with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's meeting with U.S. President George Bush in Washington, voiced concern that it's time for the international community to face up to the threat. "The Iranian regime denies the existence of the Holocaust," explained Livni. "It speaks openly about the need to wipe Israel off the map and pursuing the nuclear weapon to do so. It finances and directs terrorism in massive proportion to further its interest and ideology. This regime is a clear and present threat to Israel, but it is no less a threat to the values of the world community and the security of the region and the world as a whole," she said. Livni added that the recent Lebanon war with Hezbollah was really a war against Iran. At the same time, she added optimism in her hopes that a permanent peace with Palestinian leaders can be worked out. "There is in fact a common vision that binds Israelis, moderate Palestinians and the international community together," said Livni. "It serves the goals of both people and represents the basis of a genuine and lasting peace. At its heart, it is the vision of two states, Israel and Palestine, living side-by-side in peace in security." she said. Livni concluded her speech by saying the need to prevent another holocaust is more important than the price of oil. Israeli Prime Minister Olmert is to give the keynote closing speech to the United Jewish Communities' General Assembly at 0015GMT on Wednesday (November 15). SPEECHES
