USA: U.S. President George W. Bush defends Tony Blair during British PM's farewell visit to the White House

At a news conference during Tony Blair's final White House visit as British Prime Minister on Thursday (May 17) U.S. President George Bush praised his staunchest ally in the Iraq war, as "somebody who actually follows through with his convictions." Bush said he did not know whether his close relationship with Blair was responsible for the British prime minister's plummeting domestic popularity. The U.S. president criticised the British media for its treatment of Blair. Bush described Blair as a departure from the 'blowhards' and 'hot air artists' in the political process. He also accused the British media of discounting his counterpart with just weeks remaining before he steps down from office. "You're trying to do a tap dance on his political grave. Aren't you?" Bush said. He added: "I find it interesting that the first two questions are, you know, is this the right guy? Well, he happens to be your prime minister, but more importantly he is a respected man in the international arena." Bush and Blair developed a close relationship during Bush's six years in office, especially in the war on Islamic militancy that followed the September 11 attacks on the United States. Blair stood out among many European leaders with his support for the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in 2003. He said on Thursday it was essential to remain steadfast against enemies. Bush also addressed another issue of contention between the United States and Europe --- the fight over the tenure of Paul Wolfowitz as head of the World Bank. He signalled that the controversy was nearing its end, saying: "I regret that it's come to this. I -- I admire Paul Wolfowitz. I admire his heart, and I particularly admired his focus on helping the poor." The World Bank board on Thursday fleshed out details of a resignation package would avert a decision on firing Wolfowitz, board officials said. Wolfowitz is under fire for arranging a pay and promotion agreement for his companion. The controversial former U.S. deputy defense secretary and Iraq war architect so far has resisted heavy pressure to resign.
