US election fever hits the UK

US election fever gripped the UK's American ex-pat community as voting went on into the night. In London, many shops were decked out in the stars and stripes as exiled Americans headed to bars to watch the results roll in. Many clubs and bars in the capital held invitation-only election events with big screens showing the drama unfolding. More than 500 people packed Yates' wine bar in Leicester Square, central London. Nearby Planet Hollywood was also a popular venue. Among the mainly American crowds, Republicans appeared to be extremely thin on the ground. Oliver Haugen, 34, said: "Obama has been inspirational. When you talk to people here and back home, everyone has been impressed with how he has come across." Bostonian Anne Hoy, 63, said: "John McCain is a great patriot, he was a prisoner of war, he always puts the country first."
