Urban Transport: Air monitoring

On 25/09/2007, the European Commission will publish a Green Paper on urban transport, which will be the basis for the development of European policy in this area. The publication of the document will hopefully open European debate on the problems facing urban transport in the areas of research, environment, energy and health. Following analyses which were undertaken in the framework of the Green Paper, it is clear that urban transport is less dangerous for one's health than using a private car. To illustrate this, the European Commission's audiovisual service is producing an infoclip which will include footage illustrating: - a statement by Janez Potocnik, Member of the EC in charge of Science and Research, on air pollution tests; - Jacques Barrot, Vice-President of the EC in charge of Transport, walking in an area with dense traffic; - Janez Potocnik in his car; - kits used to measure air pollution levels being prepared in an EC Joint Research Centre laboratory in Ispra (Italy); - scientist announcing results of the air pollution tests; - public transport users wearing the kits used to measure air pollution levels.
