University of Texas (UT) Swimming Athletics Tour

Trey Zepeda, the head strength and conditioning coach at the University of Texas (UT), gives a tour of the athlete swimming facilities. ?What are you doing Stack TV? My name is Trey Zepeda, straight to conditioning coach here at the University of Texas. Take it through my house. This place I?m about to take you, athletes only. Nobody else, you?re not an athlete, I?m sorry, you can?t come in but you?re with me so roll it on. This is the dungeon. I know, there?s no chains or no wet moldy walls but it?s home so, you get a little bit of thing that we need in here. There?s not a whole lot of bells and whistles and fancy stuff that you might say, ?Wow, that?s obscure looking device.? So, primarily on this side of the wall, we have mostly all of our platforms. Every thing are pillows in here. The thing about kilos are athletes coming out from freshmen and like kilos. What?s a kilo? That?s what we call for weights. We don?t work out for pounds in here. Its more than an international system as you see in most gyms, in places, you gotta find bench press of two or three or maybe even six as we have here. We have some power rocks and we do some squatting down in the other end and have few leg presses over here for isolated movements as far as the legs, thighs. Life cycle, tires, bikes, thread mills, things to that nature. Jumping, it?s a key component on all athletes. Believe it or not, even in golfers, and we use these boxes for that pliametric type exercises. So, once again, this is our teraphelio that we do a lot of our pliametric area. It?s not just a carpet on the ground, there?s about a ply wood four to six inches of very dense, closed foam under here to absorb shock. It?s not aggressive on the joints when you?re doing your exercises. Once again, we got our dumbbell racks, ranging in anywhere from three pounds all the way up to 150 pounds. That band, I use a lot of attention band stuff on internal, external rotation movements. A lot of different things can be used with the extension bands. We use them for resistance on bench presses and squats, just basically a giant rubber band that adds to resistance to whatever exercises that you may do. I may take you to the waiting room, we call this Mont Cre New House Athletics center. It?s the big way round, this is where most athletics come through. Spell all the teams on campus on one point to the other, they train all here at the center of the University of Texas. So, come on in, I?m gonna show you around quickly in this place. It?s big so hold on. So, as you can see, we are elevated right now. Pretty much everything in here is consisting of exactly what you see over in the LA. But here on the Mont Crif, this is double of everything. You got your plat forms, you got your Olympic weights, you got your bench presses, you got your squat power racks, better yet though, on the back side of that, we?re gonna check it out, there?s a 70 meter four length dash. We have four lanes to work either direction and then you can go back in your wage room with stores on the right side of the wall, we have a couple of punching bags. Every once in a while, we go there, couple of teams work there, work at the heavy bag, get a little aggression out, plus it?s a good conditioning exercise. Now, I?m bringing you over to a new world, its Lean, Jo, Jamel ? Texas swimmers. So, let?s go in and check it out a real quick. It?s the agency where it happens to all my swimming team. So, not only in the ideal weight team, that?s only half the battle. So, for all of you young cats out there, that are thinking this is where the magic created and this is where your success gonna come from, you?re correct but that?s only half of it. Weight training is really critical, and becoming a very successful swimmer. This is our swimming, we hold a lot of events here, we have a long course of event, we have a short course training here. On the far side over there, we have all of our dives, different plat forms, different pools for those guys but this is where magic happens. Let?s go check the locker room, men?s locker room, its nothing fancy, but you know what, all the works done in the pool and in the weight level. You?ve already seen that so let?s check this out because I know you?re dying to see it. But I tell you, pretty impressive. Its not what the locker room looks like, its what you can do in the water, right? You just need a place hang your wet clothes, then change when you get down swimming then go home. This is, this is Texas swimming and diving men?s locker room.?
