Afghanistan's President Hamid Karzai meets with South Korean Prime Minister Han Duk Soo at the United Nations. At the U.N. headquarters for the General Assembly, Afghanistan's President Hamid Karzai met with South Korean Prime Minister Han Duk Soo on Monday (September 24). The meeting comes after 19 South Korean missionaries were recovered after being held hostage by Afghanistan's Taliban earlier in September. South Korea's spy chief came under fire for the high-profile mission to Afghanistan, during which Taliban leaders allege National Intelligence Service (NIS) Director Kim Man-bok struck a $20 million (USD) deal for the release of hostages. On Sunday, key countries involved in an 18-nation meeting at U.N. headquarters pressed Karzai, heading Kabul's delegation, to promote national reconciliation through an "inclusive political dialogue" with the country's turbulent factions. Karzai urged the United Nations to expand its role there, but Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said continuing violence kept the world body from operating in some areas. President Karzai will address the United Nations General Assembly on September 25th, and Prime Minister Han will address leaders at the world body on September 28th.
