UNITED KINGDOM: Soul singer Lemar is the man of the moment taking home two Mobo Awards

London-born star Lemar felt 'over the moon' as he became a double winner at the Mobo Awards on Thursday (September 22) in London's Royal Albert Hall. The soul sensation beat Mariah Carey and John Legend in the Best Album category and Joss Stone to UK Act of the Year. "Over the moon man, I'm over the moon, UK Act and Best Album, you know. That means a lot to me, I'm really happy," Lemar told Reuters. The 10th anniversary of the Mobos, which honour music of black origin, was opened by Lauryn Hill. U.S. singer-songwriter John Legend beat Lemar and Mariah Carey to Best R&B Act . "I saw Lemar winning Best Album, I figured he'd probably win Best R&B too. But, you know, everybody in the category is really talented and, you know, have done excellent albums this year and I'm just happy to be able to win," Legend said. Kano took home the Best UK Newcomer Award. The MC/street poet also performed with over 50 dancers. "It feels like it's finally paying off, we're getting that recognition that we deserve and there's a future in this. It's not a scene, it's not a fade away. We're to stay. Next year, see you again," he said. U.S. rap pioneers Public Enemy were honoured with an award for Outstanding Contribution to Black Music. The Award was given by Best UK Radio DJ Tim Westwood. "The big award, as Tim has given it to us and Public Enemy, my guys. Knowing my guys, my guys know it's for the people, my guys always had a fondness for the people of the UK and just the community that is growing here. And it's a fantastic thing, also see a lot of the UK performers do their thing and performing so well," said Chuck D of Public Enemy. Best Reggae Act went to Damian Marley, who was honoured to be compared to his late father. "He's the greatest, so it's great to be compared to the greatest," Marley told Reuters. He also accepted a Posthumous Achievement Award for his late father Bob Marley. As tribute Damian Marley closed the show with a performance of Could You Be Loved, accompanied by brothers Julian and Stephen.
