UK/FILE: Amy Winehouse's father says boycott of her music would not help her drug problem

Winehouse's father-in-law Giles Civils calls on fans to stop buying her music to send a message to the singer. But, the 23-year-old's father says boycotting her music would not help her drug problem and possibly make it worse. The father-in-law of best-selling British singer Amy Winehouse urged fans on Tuesday (August 28) to stop buying her music as a way of helping her and her husband to stop abusing drugs. Giles Fielder-Civil told BBC Radio 5 that Winehouse and his son Blake had become drug addicts and were in abject denial. They added the singer should not be given any awards for which she is nominated, to show the couple's behaviour was not acceptable. Winehouse received 4 Mobo nominations last week. But, Winehouse's father on Wednesday (August 29) said boycotting his daughter's music would not help her drug problem and possibly make it worse. "It's not going to have any effect. If I thought it would have an effect, then obviously it would be a good idea. People buy her albums because they like her music and they like Amy and if we took a unilateral decision like that, not that it would be possible, all that would happen is that it would force Amy and Blake closer together and feel that the world was against them even more than they feel that it is now and it would make the situation worse," said Mitchell Winehouse. The 23-year-old singer's "Back to Black" album has topped the British charts and sold strongly around the world. Her song "Rehab", about someone refusing to seek help for drinking at a rehabilitation clinic, is in the running for best single at the MOBO awards Earlier this month the Winehouse announced she was postponing a tour to Canada and United States to deal with "health issues". British tabloid newspapers have closely chronicled the increasingly chaotic lifestyle of the singer who in recent photos appeared with bruises covering her upper body to her neck, bandages on her arms and make-up smeared down her face. Fielder-Civil appeared to have scratches covering his face and neck. Police confirmed they attended an incident but no charges were pressed.
