Two tropical storms are battering the Far East

Japan is braced for a tropical storm which could hit the centre of the country on Tuesday. 50,000 people have been told to evacuate coastal areas of western Japan following warnings of heavy rain, flooding and mudslides triggered by approaching tropical storm Etau. Both Etau and Typhoon Morakot have left scores dead or missing in China and Taiwan over the weekend. At least 12 people have been killed during the worst flooding to hit Taiwan in five decades. Ten people have already been killed in Japan during flash floods. Up to a million people fled their homes over the weekend in Fujian Province and Zhejiang in mainland China. One child was killed and 2,000 homes destroyed. Six Chinese provinces and Taiwan are expecting fierce rain storms over the coming hours.
