Tribute to Sgt Paul McAleese Son of Sgt John Mac Ex SAS Killed 20th August 2009 Helmand Povince

The 29-year-old, described as "one of the best of his generation", became a father just a week before he deployed to Afghanistan, following the birth of his son, Charley, The MoD said on Friday night. Sgt McAleese, who was serving with the 2nd Battalion the Rifles, was caught out in what commanders fear is a new Taliban tactic that has claimed the lives of 14 soldiers in the town of Sangin. He was killed by an improvised explosive device on Thursday while helping to secure a key thoroughfare in Sangin as part of providing security for the Afghan elections. He had completed tours of Northern Ireland, Sierra Leone, Iraq and Kosovo, before going to Afghanistan, where he had recently taken over as a Rifle Platoon Sergeant following the injury of a colleague. His father was the SAS trooper pictured on the balcony roof at the front of the Iranian embassy in the 1980 siege in which 19 hostages were freed and five out of six terrorists killed. He served in the SAS for 15 years including operating in the Falklands War and Northern Ireland and on retirement worked in the security business
