It was back to work with a harsh reality check for millions of Londoners today as they were faced with inflation-busting fare hikes on the tubes and buses. Even though the price rises were made public last year, they still caught many commuters unawares as they trudged back to the office today after the New Year break. The biggest rises are in "on-the-day" tickets, with a single journey on the tube now costing four pounds. But mayor Ken Livingstone was unrepentent, telling commuters that now's the time to get an Oyster Card.
