The Watchmen - Billy Crudup talks at the UK Premiere

Heroes of the action movie Watchmen have graced the red carpet in London for the film's world premiere. Based on the critically acclaimed graphic novel created by writer Alan Moore, artist Dave Gibbons and colourist John Higgins, the film stars Malin Akerman, Patrick Wilson, and Billy Crudup. Other actors who took part in the project include Matthew Goode, Carla Gugino, Jackie Earle Haley and Jeffrey Dean Morgan. Watchmen is set in an alternate 1985 America in which costumed superheroes are part of the fabric of society, and the Doomsday Clock, which charts the tension between the US and the Soviet Union, moves closer to midnight. When one of his former colleagues is murdered, the outlawed vigilante Rorschach, played by Haley, sets out to uncover a plot to kill and discredit all past and present superheroes. He gets back with his former crime-fighting legion of retired superheroes - only one of whom has true powers. Rorschach glimpses a wide-ranging and disturbing conspiracy with links to their shared past and catastrophic consequences for the future. Director Zack Snyder described working on Watchmen as a "labour of love" and said the source material was "pretty amazing". Akerman, who plays Silk Spectre II, said she had no problem being a hero alongside the guys: "Who could complain about that? It was fantastic, you know the one thing I love and appreciate about this role is that she's an equal with all the guys, whereas a lot of times in a film you'll see the woman as the girlfriend or the wife or you know, but this time she is one of the 'Watchmen' and I loved it." Watchmen opens in the UK and US on March 6, 2009.
