The stars arrive for the 2009 Brit Awards

Welsh soul star Duffy has kicked off the Brits by winning the British Female Solo Artist award. Irish band U2 opened the show with new single Get On Your Boots, which is released this week. Kylie Minogue, wearing a flowing white dress, performed a comedy dance routine to her hit Can't Get You Out of My Head with co-hosts, Gavin and Stacey stars James Corden and Mathew Horne, who wore tight-fitting red dresses. The cream of the music world gathered at London's Earls Court for the awards ceremony, with Coldplay and Duffy leading the nominations with four nods each. The Pet Shop Boys were due to be presented with the outstanding contribution to music award, while Florence & The Machine were named critics' choice. Nationwide Mercury Prize winners Elbow had three Brits nominations - best group, best album and best live act. The best British single is decided by a live telephone vote. The Brits Academy, made up of 1,000 invited music industry insiders and critics, decide on the remaining eight awards.
