The Virgin and Child with St Anne and the Infant St John, Leonardo da Vinci's famous cartoon of 1506/8 which had been at The National Gallery in London since 1962, was attacked with a shotgun on July 17, 1987. This video, compiled from footage exclusive to The National Gallery, offers a unique and fascinating insight into the methods of a modern conservator and those of past centuries, and into the working practices of Leonardo himself.
