The Orinoco Crocodile

A cattle ranch, just like many of those that abound in the flooded plains of the Orinoco basin, is the location where an interesting developement occurred, important to our natural world. Half a century ago, a rancher decided to share his cattle business with conservation of the wealthy fauna of the region. Twenty years ago, the first attempts to breed the Orinoco crocodile in captivity were made to save this endagered species, caused by massive hunting for its valuable skin. This DVD of Wild Venezuela shows the entire yearly process from egg collecting to the release of the crocodiles into the wild. Several parallel episodes help to provide an understanding of the environment and the fauna of the region. The footage in this episode was filmed for the first time.
