THAILAND: Military coup: Ousted Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra visits London / Thai military leader promises elections for new leader

He was ousted as Thailand's prime minister in a military coup while attending a UN summit in New York. Now he has arrived in London on a private visit. With Thaksin Shinawatra out of the country, the leaders of the takeover have announced that they will choose a replacement in the next two weeks and hand over power to a new civilian government. But democratic elections are unlikely to be held for another year. Thailand's first coup in 15 years has been condemned by the US and the EU.
