"The source of innovation is a place of fearlessness where we are not trying to force things to happen," says Gayle Gregory, motivation and leadership coach and co-author of The Grand Experiment: An Expedition of Self-Discovery, "Creativity is an automatic outcome of dismantling those fears." How do you tap into this source of all innovation and make it work for your business? Consider the following tips to energize your businesses performance by eliminating the fears that drain innovation. ==Dismantle Fear== -Where fear exists, innovation generally does not. In a workplace where fear motivates the actions of employees, creative ideas do not flow freely. -Are your employees afraid to share ideas? Do they compete amongst each other in groups? Do they not ask questions for fear of looking dumb? Do they hesitate to share credit or glory? Are they often guarded or defensive? These actions are indicative of fear in the environment. -Expose fear by laying it out on the table. Discuss it openly, and do not avoid the subject of what makes people nervous. While it may be difficult at first, as more and more fears are laid out, it becomes a game, and something that people no longer avoid. ==Engage Employees== -80% of all workers say they are unsatisfied with their jobs. New generations of workers are more likely to leave a company when unsatisfied. -To keep new talent, encourage a positive and proactive workplace that engages the whole person, rather than a forced labor environment. -When a person is satisfied with his or her job, they give the company their passion; and with passion comes innovation. ==Be Positive== -Do not discourage creativity. Allow people to have and present ideas and hunches. -Encourage interactivity between members of groups and departments. Isolation breeds separation. To fully compete in the market, your company and the divisions within it must work as one contiguous unit.
