In a show of solidarity to the Tamil Eelam cause, the Tamil film fraternity today (November 1) observed a day-long fast in Chennai against killings of Sri Lankan Tamils in the ongoing Army offensive in the northern parts of the Island nation. The actors under the leadership of Artistes Association President actor Sarath Kumar participated in a one day fast with industry bigwigs including South superstar Rajnikanth and Kamal Hassan expected to turn up in support of the cause. South Indian actors Nepolean, Satyaraj, Vijay, Arjun, Pasupathi and Manorama, led by the Association's president R Sarath Kumar, observed the fast, which began this morning. The programme was organised to express the Association's solidarity with Tamils living in Sri Lanka and support them, Sarath Kumar told TIMES NOW. Hoping that normalcy will return in Sri Lanka soon, Kumar said it is good that the Centre and state governments have already started taking steps to find an amicable solution on the matter. Today's fast is just more than an emotional issue. It also has a commercial angle to it. Of late, Sri Lankan immigrants form a major chunk of Kollywood's overseas market. Recently Tamil Actor Ajith's Diwali relaese ' Aegan' did not release in some European countries when the Sri Lankan Diaspora learnt that Ajith would not champion the Eelam cause. This is, however, not the first time the south actors have joined hands for a cause. In April this year, the Tamil filmdom came together during the Hogenekkal row and organised a massive fast. Controversial speeches had emerged from actors like Rajnikanth and Satyaraj during the incident. However, this time the actors have vowed to steer clear from any controversial speeches. Further, the arrest of two famous directors - Ameer and Seeman - last week for their allegedly 'seditious speeches' has shook the Tamil filmdom.
