Suspicious Activities

"Suspicious Activities" Paintings and Works on Paper by Aziza Claudia Gibson-Hunter Curated by Michael Platt http://www.GibsonHunterStudio.com DC Arts Center 2438 18th street NW Washington, DC 20009 October 17- Nov 18, 2008 Suspicious Activities is a collection of paintings and works on paper exploring the politicization of language and the actions hidden behind the words. A critical gaze is focused on the speech/acts of the Bush administration and the process of corporate globalization. The language of the US government during the Iraq war and when the levees broke in New Orleans, Louisiana, is similar. The lack clear articulation of policy expressed to end the murders in Darfur Sudan, and African Americans, in Washington D.C., exhibit an eerie resemblance. Although the locations are on different ends of the earth, terminology, the actions and inactions it cloaks, hide the impact of suspicious activities. This coupled with the lack of overt political pressure from organized masses of individuals, become building blocks for a dangerous Orwellian world. The intent of these works is to empower the viewer by relaying, exposing, and depicting parallels between the local, national and international use of political language and the covert or blatant activities it conceals. The work was created to encourage the public to acknowledge and confront the contradictions of our countrys foreign and domestic conduct.
