Very few steam train tours in Australian railway history, have matched the scale of QRs 140th anniversary trip from Brisbane to Kuranda and back. Seven carriages and a dining car are set to be hauled by BB18 and a quarter number ten eighty nine, over a distance of almost 3500 kilometers, through the numerous cities, rainforests and national parks on Queensland's spectacular north coast railway. But when disaster strikes at Pomona, diesels are called to the rescue and the train is towed into the original Maryborough station. After emergency repairs by engineers, the loco is still unable to proceed and the train is taken By diesel to Gladstone, where, overnight, the splendid American built AC16 class locomotive takes charge on the sunshine route. Numerous branch lines, where passenger trains haven't traveled in years, and glorious scenery unfold, as the every day operations of the line pass by until the train reaches cairns. Cane railways, molasses trains, and super freighters pass by before the spectacular ascent of the Cairns range, where the AC16 is put through its paces! A real treat on the home run, is the revival of the Bety, and together they make a stunning, arrival back in Brisbane.
