The stars of Mr Magorium's Wonder Emporium have attended the film's premiere in New York.Natalie Portman was joined by Dustin Hoffman and Jason Bateman for the red carpet event. The fantasy tale centres around a magical toy store owned by a 243-year-old eccentric (Hoffman), who eventually passes it on to his assistant, Molly Mahoney (Portman).Portman said she identified with her character because of her own struggles to find self-confidence and transition into adulthood. She said: "I think the character's debate of trying to find what was special inside herself and believing in the magic in the world, but not seeing it in herself. That all got me."The actress is getting ready to embark on her directorial debut, a film adaptation of Israeli author Amos Oz's biography.Portman said: "I've been acting since I was 11, so it's 15 years now, so you get to a point where you're like, 'okay, I'm ready to create my own thing."It doesn't have to be just me working on other people's creations. I mean obviously you create a character when you're working, but I was like 'this is my time' but it's really scary because you're really putting yourself out there in a different way because it's much more personal."Mr Magorium's Wonder Emporium is out in the UK on December 14.© Independent Television News Limited 2007.
