People living close to Stansted Airport in Essex have turned out in force for a council planning meeting deciding whether or not the number of flights in and out could be massively increased. Campaigners against the plans cite environmental and noise pollution reasons - but the British Airports Authority is adamant that the extra capacity is essential for the future. Later on, however, councillors in Essex threw out the plans to expand Stansted airport, specifically quoting the government's own Stern Review that had called for big cuts in greenhouse gas emissions. Councillors say government policy is based on a contradiction between the need to stop climate change and support for ever greater numbers of flights. BAA, which owns Stansted, says it will appeal. protesters / meeting/ Carol Barbone
