Senator Edward Kennedy's treatment will take a team of doctors in several specialties, including oncology, and radiology. Sophisticated equipment is needed to improve the odds of survival. Eye on Health spoke with a local physician who makes sure people in Las Vegas get the best care possible. As an oncologist with Nevada Cancer Centers, Dr. Ann Wierman helps to give patients a fighting chance against brain tumors, including malignant glioma. She says Las Vegas has every means available for doctors to treat this often aggressive form of cancer. "We have multiple radiation-oncology specialists that are experts are treating primary brain tumors. Not only with the Gamma knife, but also with the special radiation seeds or other modalities of therapy," said Dr. Wierman. The gamma knife at Sunrise Hospital is specifically designed to treat brain tumors through highly precise beams of radiation. Elsewhere across the valley, medical centers have the most advanced tools available for diagnosing and treating malignancies. If caught earlier enough, a brain tumor can be surgically removed. If a partial removal is the only option, a new radiation pill might be added to the arsenal. "It's a capsule that you take along with radiation therapy. That gets rid of any residual cancer cells that are left after surgery," said Dr. Wierman. Dr. Wierman says because of the specialized treatment options available here, patients with brain tumors come to Las Vegas from California, Utah and Arizona. Senator Kennedy's doctors have said surgery is not an option for him. Source KLAS TV (May 2008)
