Taffy Adler wants to make Johannesburg a better place to live. As head of an unusual building society, he offers thousands of people safe homes in the middle of a city that has had a high level of criminal activity since apartheid ended. Because of this problem, businesses and residents who can afford to, have left the city centre and moved to the suburbs, while downtown Johannesburg has continued to decay. Even the police seem almost to have abandoned the district. Taffy Adler has not. His Johannesburg Housing Company now controls 24 buildings with a total of around 8500 tenants. The housing complexes offer socially deprived families affordable and safe homes, where staff even see to their welfare needs.
