(NECN: Dracut, Mass.) - In Massachusetts, smokers may soon be paying more for that pack of cigarettes. It's all part of a $400 million tax package being approved by House lawmakers. The dollar increase on cigarette tax would generate an estimated $175 million and would go into effect in July if the bill becomes law. Supporters also said the cigarette tax would deter smoking. Critics said raising taxes doesn't make sense in a recession, and would drive smokers across the border. NECN's Latoyia Edwards has more on the next step for this proposal.
