The mudslides in June last year were triggered by heavy rains that ravaged dozens of slum dwellings. But authorities blame the landslides largely on indiscriminate destruction of hills for building condominiums or industrial complexes by large companies that defy the law prohibiting such actions. Every year, some 50,000 Bangladeshis are left homeless because of natural disasters, forcing many to seek refuge in slums.
