yah, you read it right, Sinterklaas...not Santa Claus. notice the similarity? ahh yes, i thought so. See, the idea comes from Saint Nicolas, or Sinterklaas -as we call him- ! Both men are old and friendly, dressed in red, give presents to children who've been nice (and our old geezer takes the bad children back to spain where he lives, in a sack, to get punished with a broom of some sorts (dunno the name)) We celebrate the birthday of Sinterklaas on December 5 :) lemme explain that too: Saint Nicolas' birthday was on December 5, and in his time (some thousands of years ago) children were poor and didnt have shoes. Nicolas was rich, but didn't like that those children had nothing, so he gave them shoes. Throughout the years that changed a bit into giving presents, and in the weeks before his birthday, you can put your shoe in front of the heater before you go to bed (and you can leave a drawing or a carrot for his horse or something for Zwarte Piet, or Black Pete (translated)in it) and in the morning you can find special sweets and/or a little present. On December 5, you get the actual present(s)! Children in Holland love this holiday, and parents love to see it! And of course there's the people who love making those people happy (because many, many people play Sinterklaas or Zwarte Piet) So yah, here's a bit of the procession of Sinterklaas through our small village, from the haven to the sportshall :) *hums a sinterklaas song* if you look VERREH closely, you can see Sinterklaas sitting in the BMW...emphasis on very and closely :P
