The actress Dame Helen Mirren has won the Oscar for Best Actress, the first Briton in 15 years to win the award at the ceremony in Los Angeles. Following her Oscar-winning portrayal of Elizabeth Windsor, Mirren is thought likely to receive an invitation from Buckingham Palace to meet the Queen. However, predictions that Stephen Frears' and Peter Morgan's film would win multiple awards proved unfounded. Other Oscars were won by actor Forest Whitaker and veteran director Martin Scorsese. Irish actor Peter O'Toole, nominated eight times, once again left the ceremony empty handed.
