Rows break out at Troubles report announcement

Rows have broken out at the unveiling of a report which recommends payments of £12,000 to families affected by the Northern Ireland Troubles - including those of terrorists. Bereaved relatives of dead Loyalists and Republicans traded insults just feet from Northern Ireland Chief Constable Sir Hugh Orde. They had gathered at Belfast's Europa Hotel to hear report author's Lord Eames and Dennis Bradley defend their recommendation of handing a £12,000 payment to the families of all victims, including dead paramilitaries. Sinn Fein president Gerry Adams, who was sitting in the hall, was among those targeted by the protesters. One screamed: "This is the man who was in charge of the IRA on the day of Bloody Friday." Others hit back and shouted: "You should be arrested. Leave him alone. Why don't you get out?" Lord Eames and Mr Bradley have insisted the offer is not about compensation or financial reward, but a recognition of the pain suffered by those bereaved. They said: "It is a small gesture by our society to acknowledge the grief of the families left devastated by the last 40 years." The 190-page report contains more than 30 recommendations on how Northern Ireland can deal with its troubled past, with the aim of helping to create a better future.
