Rotary International, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and the British and German governments have committed more than $630 million in new funds to fight polio. Polio has been completely eliminated in much of the world, but persists in Afghanistan, India, Nigeria, and Pakistan, and imported cases from these countries threaten other nations. The polio eradication initiative faces an ongoing funding shortfall that must be closed to achieve eradication. Rotary Foundation Chair Jonathan Majiyagbe said the new commitments will inspire other allies to ramp up their support.
