Riz Khan Imam Mohammad Qatanani 2 Oct 08 - Part 1

How did a New Jersey town rise above post 9/11 prejudices to find justice and create a stronger community based on interfaith understanding? On Thursday's Riz Khan we look at the remarkable case of Imam Mohammad Qatanani - a man who faced certain deportation, along with his family, had his community not rallied behind him. Speaking on his behalf in court were a Jewish Rabbi, Christian priest, local sheriffs and FBI agents. The Imam was targeted by the Department of Homeland Security because of a prior detention by Israel. While detained, he was tortured and forced to sign a confession which he could not read. In the end, the US Immigration Judge ruled that the Department of Homeland Security testimony was unreliable and said that the family should be granted residency status. We look at the implications of the case, how it serves as a model, not only for the US, but for interfaith dialogue everywhere.
