RETURN TO COMBOLAND - THE dB's - Judy--LIVE at The Pier 1981

RETURN TO COMBOLAND - A personal look at North Carolina's most influential (and secret) music legacy. Documentary Seeking Co-Production Partner - Produced and Directed by Steve Boyle. This is a sample of some of the archived music videos Steve created from 1981 to 1984. Artist featured: THE dB's Chris Stamey (Guitar, Vocals), Peter Holsapple (Guitar, Vocals), Gene Holder (Bass), Will Rigby (Drums). Part of the intrigue and frustration of the Return To Comboland project is the quality of some of the footage. In this case, footage that is over 25 years old and lost. That's right, lost. The original camera videotape was stolen in 1985. At this point I have not been able to find a back-up copy of the tape. If one exists, it is drowning in 80 to 100 hours of raw footage I have not been able to review due to the volume of material and the fact that most of the tapes exist on an antique format. The only broadcast quality back-up that I know to exist was sent to the dB's manager in 1981, which at this point is missing in action. BUT a VHS copy of the dB's manager's tape showed up in Tony Madejczyk's basement in March (it pays to throw NOTHING away!). I have transferred and color corrected this tape and Chris Stamey was kind enough to clean up the audio. As much as this footage is not pristine, it is considered historic. This is the only known live / club performance footage of the dB's with Chris in the band from the 1980's. And so I am very happy and proud to offer this performance to the public. There were a number of songs shot that evening, but only as segments. JUDY is one of three songs that was shot in its entirety. As opposed to UPS & DOWNS and TOMORROW NEVER KNOWS, JUDY was shot earlier in the show from the back of The Pier. JUDY was meant as a cover shot to be intercut with whatever I could shoot closer up later in the evening, which would be UPS & DOWNS. As for the back story to why this 1981 performance was shot in the first place, please read the video description to the dB's UPS & DOWNS as well as Luky Owens LIKE A REVOLVER.
