re/action: performance art now

"RE/ACTION: PERFORMANCE ART NOW" To coincide with the closing of the exhibition "The Theory of Flight" by Johan Thom on 8 August 2007, the Bag Factory Gallery presents an evening of Performance Art. This event showcases the outcomes of an extensive workshop in Performance Art that the artist, through the About Art programme, presented at the Fordsburg Artists Studios from the 25 July -- 8 August 2007. Young and emerging artists from as far a field as Cape Town, Johannesburg and Pretoria participated in the workshop, each brining their own skills, insight and artistic voice to the group dynamic. For many of them the works showcased on this exhibition also represent their first active exploration of the possibilities of performance art. Nonetheless, the all the works reflect something of the incredible group dynamic that existed throughout the duration of the workshop. From the group discussion, group actions and even the "Guerrilla style" public performances created at the Johannesburg Art Gallery during the course of the workshop, each activity was fiercely debated and probed for aesthetic possibilities that could still be explored in greater depth. Tonight each of these artists presents a new work that actively engages with the strategies, concepts and possibilities of performance art, whilst maintaining affirm link with their own field of interest (albeit painting, installation, sculpture or drama etc).
