The painting depicts the Virgin with two children symbolising the young Christ and John the Baptist. The goldfinch is a symbol of Christ's future passion. The artwork is considered to be one of the greatest masterpieces of Italian Renaissance. Raphael painted the panel in around 1506, as a wedding present for a rich wool merchant.
