Prop 2 favored by 60 percent

Proposition 2 is favored by 60 percent in the final survey released prior to Election Day by the California Field Poll. This gives Prop 2 a 33-percentage-point margin — 60 percent to 27 percent — with 13 percent undecided. Of those who had already cast ballots, Prop 2 was favored by 55 percent. There has been little change in voter’s opinions on Prop 2 since this summer. The July field poll found voters were in favor of the initiative by 63 percent to 24 percent. Prop 2 prohibits veal calves, egg-laying hens and pregnant pigs from being tethered or confined in such a way that they cannot lie down, stand up and fully extend their limbs, or turn around freely without touching the sides of an enclosure, during the majority of the day. Studies from the University of California-Davis have suggested that Prop 2 will eliminate the California egg industry. “This proposition is not about chickens in cages or how we raise animals. The real agenda is that the Humane Society wants to eliminate the consumption of animal tissues, period, says Bob Cherenson, veterinarian with Lander Vet Clinic in Turlock, Calif. “This is an animal-rights initiative, not an animal-welfare initiative.
