The lights on europe's tallest Christmas tree were switched on on Saturday night (November 19). The 72-metre high artificial tree - the equivalent of a 23-storey building - is located in the Portuguese capital Lisbon. Thousands of people turned up to celebrate the occasion. The spectacular light display was augmented by fireworks and classical music. A team of 350 people helped erect the tree in the 18th century Horse square of Terreiro do Paco, in front of Tagus River. Nearly two and a quarter million light bulbs were used, along with 18-kilometres of light tubing and 320 metres of neon lighting. The tree was a gift to Lisbon from a private bank. It'll remain on display until January 8th next year and can be seen from various parts of the city. A twin-tree will be inaugurated on December 6th in Poland.
