Three British adults and a German tourist have drowned attempting to rescue young children in the Algarve in Portugal. Robert and Deborah Fry and Barbara Jean Dismore, from Wootton Bassett near Swindon were overcome by strong currents when they went into the sea to help their children. The children, who were pulled to safety, had encountered difficulties swimming off a dangerous beach which was officially closed for the season and therefore did not have a lifeguard. Portuguese authorities have been criticised for not making available more information about the beach's dangers and for poor co-ordination in the rescue operation.
