As a young man, Arend rescued the Oetker corporation from certain ruin, becoming known as one of Germany's smartest businessmen. Nowadays, he's involved in a different kind of enterprise. The 69-year-old travels around Germany gathering donations on behalf of artists and universities. Arend has always harboured a passion for art and philosophy. After university, he wanted to go abroad for a few years to gain experience and add to his art collection. But it wasn't to be. His mother's business was failing and Arend had to step in and rescue it. By 1967, he'd managed to make it one of the most successful family business in German history. Now that the company no longer requires his personal attention, Arend is free to follow his passions. Manuel Özcerkes accompied him on his quest to drum up donations for Leipzig University.
