POLITICS: Labour Party Conference: Chancellor considers plans to guarantee savers' money

Millions of savers could get new, US-style protection to safeguard their money if a bank or building society collapses. Chancellor Alistair Darling's plans are a direct result of the run on the Northern Rock bank. The Chancellor may guarantee people's savings of up to one hundred thousand pounds (more than three times the current scheme) which will be paid for by the banks themselves.
