Police dash cam.January 14/09.A Kernersville policeman's dashboard camera caught a burning home as it suddenly explodes. The fire chief said the explosion was caused by a backdraft, where a fire that was almost out suddenly is exposed to fresh air. KERNERSVILLE, N.C. -- Eight people escaped uninjured from a Kernersville home that eventually exploded as firefighters tried to extinguish the blaze . Fire units responded to the call at a home in the 1300 block of Union Cross Road at about 2 a.m. Eight people were inside the home, but all were able to escape without any injuries. Sedge Garden Road at Union Cross Road in Kernersville was blocked Wednesday morning after water that had been used to extinguish an overnight fire froze on the roadway. Kernersville Police Chief Neal Stockton said a police cruiser dash camera was able to capture a large explosion that happened inside the house as firefighters were working to extinguish the fire. One firefighter who was inside the house when the explosion happened was taken to the hospital to be treated for minor injuries. He has since been released. "The crew he was on was doing an interior attack through the front door. We had been on scene less than 15 minutes and the house exploded," said Kernersville Fire Battalion Chief Danny Kiger. Neighbors said the explosion was so forceful, it shook several homes that were located near the scene of the fire. "I heard about four explosions. About 30 minutes later I heard an explosion that shook the house and I said, "CT, something's wrong!" neighbor Priscilla Caudill said of her conversation with her husband who was still asleep in bed. Kiger said it took nearly 3 hours to get the blaze under control. It wasn't immediately known what started the fire, or how much monetary damage the home sustained.
