PlanetFugue Tangible Instrument

Planet Fugue is a table top tangible musical interface that allows you to use any object to "shape" a musical improvisation or composition. This video shows how the instrument is used to improvise a simple piece based on open fifths. Any number of algorithms to express tone and rhythm can be programmed into the sense grids. In this video, black river stones are used in the grids for triggers. All three musical grid instruments are programmed with a logarithmic rhythm contour. Three MIDI channels address 3 instruments (although each rectangle in the grids can be assigned to their own channel): piano, rhythm and bass. PlanetFugue can be used for entertainment as well as educating people about music and the mathematics behind music. It is developed by Chito Lapena using the Processing.org platform by Ben Fry and Casey Reas. Processing plug ins used were proMidi by Christian Riekoff for interfacing with MIDI devices, LibCV, by toxi, which interfaces with the Java Media Framework and the web cam. See planetfugue.com for more information.
