Phelps makes Olympic history

The Baltimore native has passed the previous record of nine jointly held by U.S. swimmer Mark Spitz, track and field star Carl Lewis, Finnish distance runner Paavo Nurmi and Soviet gymnast Larysa Latynina. With five golds in Beijing, Phelps is still chasing the single Games record of seven held by Spitz, with three finals to go.
