The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall arrived in Pakistan on Sunday (October 29) for a five-day visit to the Islamic republic. Their itinerary is being kept a close secret because of security reasons, although a local paper and news agency have published a reported schedule. Officials are keen to keep the Royals movements a secret because of a Taliban and al Qaida presence in the country, there is also opposition to President Pervez Musharraf's military government, Sunni and Shia rivalry and the problem of the disputed region of Kashmir. All of which make the visit one fraught with possible danger. The Pakistani government mindful of worries over security has drafted thousands of extra paramilitary officers into Islamabad. On Monday Charles will hold talks with President General Musharraf. Supporters of Mirza Tahir Hussain, the Briton on death row due to be hanged in Pakistan on December 31, hope that Charles will persuade Musharraf to grant a pardon.
